Helpful tips from one of my classes about how to take some common supplements
Iron - take on an empty stomach with plenty of water because of its constipating effects. Should not be taken with tea, coffee, or milk
Calcium - take with food and divide doses throughout the day (your body doesn't absorb more than 500mg of Calcium at one time)
-Should not be taken at the same time as a multivitamin, Iron (Fe2+), Magnesium (Mg2+) or any other mineral with a 2+ charge because it will compete for absorption in the small intestine. Try to space out the time in between taking these supplements throughout the day for maximal absorption of all nutrients

Folic acid - best absorbed when taken on an empty stomach
Selenium - many people have started supplementing with selenium because of its potential antioxidant benefits. Be aware that although Canada's soil is low in selenium we do get enough of it in our diet due to import of food from around the world. If you choose to supplement with selenium the RDA for people aged 19 or older is 55µg/day and the upper limit is 400µg/day. Some potential toxic effects if over-supplementation occurs are hair loss and nerve damage, so be aware of how much you are getting through diet and other sources
