How To Avoid Hefty Holidays: 10 Tips For a Guilt-Free New Year!

The holidays are upon us and I know I'm not the only one getting excited for all the decadent delights that come with them! If you're wondering how you'll be able to drink all those cups of eggnog without regretting it in the new year then read on! (p.s no need to make a new years resolution - you can start getting healthy right away!)

1. Before going to a dinner party have a light snack. A small apple or a few carrot sticks is a perfect way to prevent overindulging in all those appetizers!

2. Make your own salad dressings. Try a recipe using fruit juice and vinegar.

3. Substitute mayonaise in your potato salads with low-fat Greek yogurt.

4. Get outdoors! If theres snow on the ground try out a fun winter sport like skiing or snowshoeing.

5. Be aware of portion sizes. Take one slice of pie and walk away! If you are hosting, let your guests take home some of the left overs.

6. Chew slowly, put your fork down and chat with family and friends. This will let your body register that you are full - before you reach for seconds.

7. Beware of the hidden calories in beverages - 8 ounces of non-alcoholic eggnog racks up a hefty 362 calories. Opt for lighter versions and smaller portions.

8. Drink lots of water in between meals and servings. This will help prevent overeating and help rehydrate you after having one too many of uncle Bob's "special" holiday drinks!

9. Plan a variety of healthy meals for days that you aren't celebrating the holidays.

10. Opt for lower fat versions of milks and cheeses when cooking. Add flavour to your food by using more herbs instead of gravies.

And my favourite tip of all: don't stress yourself out if you indulge! Every day is a new opportunity to get back on track to eating healthy.

Happy Holidays!
